How Your Brain Works

How Your Brain Works - Overview

Your brain runs on two systems at once, and only one of them asks your permission.

Your Unconscious (90%):
Fast, automatic, activated by any stimulus in a fifth of a second.

  • This is your emotion, reading threat or reward before you're aware of it.

  • Your intuition predicts outcomes from previous patterns and experience.

  • Your biases, over 100, are unconscious shortcuts that mainly keep you safe and help you identify potential benefits.

The Conscious (10%):
Slower, activation begins at half a second and can last for many seconds.

  • This is your rational logic, planning, and awareness of body feelings.

The rule underneath both:

Safety First - Before truth, before accuracy, before your goals, your brain's main job is to keep you alive. Only once it decides you're safe does it consider anything else, including whether what it just decided was actually correct, and whether there are benefit opportunities.

Safety first and Biases are not a flaw. They are the architecture every human being runs on, shaped over three million years. The problem isn't that this system exists, it's that most of us go through life never knowing it's there, letting it steer most of our approximately 50,000 thoughts a day on autopilot.

Why it matters:

  • When your unconscious and conscious brain work in sync, you get your clearest thinking and best decisions, what we call harmony.

  • When they're out of sync, you get fracture: reactivity, poor choices, decisions, and performance working against itself.

  • Whoever understands this architecture can use AI algorithms, advertisements, and clickbait media manipulation to steer and exploit you without you knowing it.

Knowing how your brain works isn't self-help.
It's self-defense. Its self-optimization. It's the first step toward reclaiming your attention, your judgment, your free will, and the best version of yourself.

What you'll take away from this module:

  • Why your brain prioritizes safety over accuracy, and what that costs you.

  • The difference between unconscious reaction and conscious reasoning.

  • Knowing how your brain works will help you thrive in your daily life.
